As Nigeria’s delegation planned
their trip back home from the All Africa Games yesterday, Nigeria
basketball coach Sanni Ahmed was still nursing the aches of the
semi-final loss to Egypt in the men’s basketball event.
Nigeria was tip to win the gold, following their triumphant run at the Afrobasket championship in Tunisia, but they were hard done by Egypt with a 61-60 points win. Nigeria beat Mali 57-55 points to win the bronze.
‘We came here with the mindset of winning the gold, but it didn’t happen the way we planned. We have to take it like that.
“The match against the Egyptians was particularly painful. This is because this was a match we came from behind and were poised to win, but some questionable calls here and there cost us the game. We are glad at least we got a medal to show for our efforts.
“We did our best it is now for us to go home and rest. The season is over.
The women team settled for silver after losing to Mali 73-57 in final.
